| 520 | |b The coup of Egypt has had several repercussions on the Palestinian issue, in general, and the Gaza Strip, in particular, as the Egyptian army showed hostile behaviours against Hamas and the strip. For example, on the coup’s first day, Egyptian forces destroyed tunnels. The Rafah Border Crossing is also closed most of the time. Gazans are suffering a lot from being prevented from travelling, a severe fuel crisis, a hike in prices of smuggled staples and expensive, scarce construction materials. \ Furthermore, Egyptian security forces tried to return the Palestinian Authority’s powers on Gaza, but Hamas rejected. \ Upon the fall of Mursi’s regime, Hamas lost one of its major allies. The ability of Qatar and Turkey for its support diminished. Thus, the group’s option of reconciliation with Fatah has become more significant, but it may also resume launching rockets against Israel. \ These developments have pushed the peace process parties to seize the opportunity to resume talks and achieve new breakthroughs in the Palestinians’ attitudes. \ Some Israeli-Western policies are likely to rise towards Gaza and Hamas, such as the attempt to improve the economic situation and enhance the diplomatic recognition of the group, in return for discarding violence but without abandoning weapons or recognizing Israel, all within the reconciliation process. | ||
