المستخلص: As a result of the complex nature of its operations, the petroleum refining industry faces many accidents and disasters that may cause severe environmental damage to prevent or limit the occurrence of such disasters, refiners must take all measures to improve the operational performance, and manage the refinery" s assets and resources in an orderly manner by applying the environmental management system. The aim of the study is to introduce the benefits of applying the environmental management system in the petroleum refining industry, it includes two parts; the first part highlighted the most important basic concepts of environmental management system, stages of development, and the benefits of its application: The second part dealt with the factors of successful implementation of the system in the petroleum refining industry and finally the importance of adopting periodical audit to ensure the continued effectiveness of the system, and the continuous improvement of applying the environmental performance in the refinery. The study focused on practical issues and analyzes the results of previous experiences undergone by others, in order to highlight benefits that could be obtained, difficulties faced during the implementation process, and means that have been followed to overcome them. The study concluded that the best solution to overcome the environmental problems facing the refining industry could be achieved through applying of environmental management system integrated with quality management and health, safety and environment systems.
