المستخلص: The US is the world’s largest consumer of both oil and natural gas, accounting for about 21% and 22% of total world consumption of oil and natural gas, respectively in 2010. The US imports far more oil than natural gas. It is the largest oil importing country, responsible for about 21% of total world oil imports. For natural gas, in view of its huge local production, the US is nearly self sufficient. As such, the US market dependency on natural gas imports is much lower than oil and it is expected to go down further in the future in the light of the big unconventional natural gas discoveries in the last few years. No doubt, the recent successes in the US oil and natural gas industry will have significant implications for the US as well as the world future energy scene. The aim of the study is mainly to shed a light on the development in the US oil and gas markets and the impact on OAPEC member countries. Section one of the study provides an overview of the US energy sector. Section two discusses US oil market developments. Section three turns to the US natural gas market, while section four addresses future prospects for the US oil and natural gas markets and their implication for OAPEC member countries.
