The research aimed to provide a comparative study on the use of radio-frequency identification technology (RFID) and barcode technology in university libraries. The research used the method of comparative study to study and analyze the similarities and differences in the profession of libraries and information and their practice in different countries in order to define and clarify the basic rules and expand knowledge. The research also used the comparative approach that depends on the comparison between services and the technical and technological characteristics of RFID system and barcode system. Moreover, the research used the descriptive approach to study the reality of a particular institution such as libraries. The research group consisted of 400 beneficiaries who were divided equally between Imam University and Dammam University. The research tools were represented in a questionnaire which was divided into three axes. The first axis dealt with the use of the library. The second one included the impact of RFID and barcodes on frequency and use of the library. The third axis mentioned a comparison between the RFID and barcodes systems to identify the merits and demerits of both systems from the point of view of the beneficiaries. The results came out with a number of points, including an increase in the number of visitors of the Central Library of Men at the University of Dammam and its users after the application of RFID technology as the system provided special facilities for the search and reach materials and reduce dependence on the human element. The field study proved that the use of the RFID system increased the number of visitors to the Central Men's Library at Dammam University as they benefited from its services. The study shed light on the need for conducting further studies of the RFID system applied in a number of Saudi libraries. Furthermore, the research recommended working on overcoming any difficulties, whether those that are related to the application or related to the beneficiaries..This abstract translated by Dar AlMandumah Inc. 2018
