This paper examines a specific linguistic phenomenon known in Arabic as the language of "Akaluni Al-Baragheeth." Variously labeled as "archaic" "weird" "irregular" or "ungrammatical many prominent linguists have rejected it and attacked its premises. The present paper however maintains that* although not standard" "Akaluni Al- Baragheeth" is a genuine Arabic dialect and therefore cannot be rejected. It is the language of some ancient Arab tribes (Banu Al-IIareth* Ka'ab‘ 'Tai etc)‘ rich with Semitic and Aramaic influences that contributed a great deal to the development of standard Arabic as we know it. Adopting a combined exploratory" descriptive and analytical methodology" the paper traces examples of its use in the Holy Qu'ran' in the venerable Iladith" and in classical Arab poetry. It further traces its roots in some modern Arab dialects* taking issue with the Arab Academy but ultimately concurring its verdict that the language of "Akaluni Al-Baragheeth" is "not standard... but cannot be wronged." The paper falls into three parts- the first defines the language of "Akaluini Al-Baragheeth"; the second discusses its referentiality and strength; and the third examines the influences it has exerted on our present Arab dialects. A concluding section sums up the main findings. |
