لقد كانت الصحراء العربية زاخرة بمشاهدها من رياح، وسراب، وكثبان، ودلاء، وأثاف وما يماثلها، تلك المشاهد عايشها الشاعر العربي فبقيت عالقة بخياله، كما احتلت حيزا واسعا من تفكيره، فبالإضافة إلى كثرة وصفه لها في كثير من قصائده فقد مثلت تلك المشاهد الصحراوية مصدر إيحاء وحافزا مهما لخياله، أفاد منها كثيرا في تعبيره وبناء صوره الخيالية في أدبه شعرا ونثرا، فعلاوة على وصفه لها في شعره فقد أفاد منها كثيرا في تعبيره عن معاني الشعر الأخرى في كل الأغراض الشعرية التي طرقها، فاستمد منها تشبيهاته واستعاراته وكناياته التي قرب بها معانيه، فأيداها في صورة أقرب ما تكون من خيال سامعه الذي يشاركه رؤية تلك المشاهد ومعايشتها، الأمر الذي يؤكد تعلق العربي بالصحراء ومشاهدها، حتى أصبحت مصدرا مهما من مصادر الخيال عنده.
