Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of all the world, and may peace and blessing be upon the soul of the prophet Mohammed and upon his family and all his companions. Commentors have studied the terms of Quran and found that some of these terms indicate one meaning, others indicate two meanings and some more meaning. I have chosen to study a subject concerning language and Quran dealing with the terms of Quran. At first the study was concerned “Terms of Sky in the Quran”. However, my supervisor Dr. Muhyee Al-Deen Tawfiq Ibrahim adding “Terms of Earth” to the title of the study due to the fact that such terms coincide in the holy Quran. So the topic has become “Terms of Sky and Earth in the Holy Quran: A Semantic Study”. The importance of this subject is that it is necessary to learn the intended meanings of the terms of “Sky” and “Earth” in the Holy Quran. The study consists of an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. Chapter One which deals with the origin of terms of “Sky” and “Earth” consists of two sections. The first one handles the intended meanings of the term “Sky” which includes five meanings: “Al-Saqaf”, “Al-Sahab”, “Al-Matar”, “Sama’a Janna wal nar” and “Al-Samaa thatuha”. The second one handles the intended meanings of the terms “Earth” which includes: “Miser”, “Bilad Al-Sham”, “Al-Madina Al-Munawara”, “Mecaa”, “Adhul-Islam”, “Al-Janna”, “Hunain”, “Ardhul-Teeh”, “Al-Yemen”, “Al-Qiama”, “Ardhul-Dunia” and “Al-Ardh-Thatuha”. Each section is followed by a table showing the location of such meanings in the holy Quran. Chapter Two studies coincide of the terms “Sky” and “earth” which includes three sections: the first one studies the term “sky” when appears alone, the second one studies the term “earth” in similar cases; whereas the third one handles the coincide of the terms “sky” and “earth”. Chapter Three deals with the composition of the terms “Sky” and “Earth” as well as their rhetorical use. The study adopts a selective approach. The study concludes the following results: - There is a relation between the term “Sky” and its intended meanings which shows a sense of heightness. - There is a relation of the term “Earth” and its intended meanings which shows a sense residence and stability. - Finally, the term “Sky” in the holy Quran is used in the plural and singular form; whereas the term “Earth” is used in the singular form only. This is due to the difficulties in pronouncing the plual form of the term “Earth”.
