This paper provides a new approach to the teaching of English grammar in Moroccan universities. The current ways of teaching grammar are surveyed; they include the following: - The presentation of points of grammar such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, etc. - The discussion of these points of grammar through exercises and drills with no appeal being made to context. The alternative approach which is suggested here is interdisciplinary in nature. It is based on the following recommendations: - Grammar should be taught in relation to the phenomenon of variation in English. - The learner should be made aware of the existence of a number of varieties in English. - The learner should be made aware of the existence of different registers of English which have special grammatical structures. - The grammar course in English should be taught in context.
