|b In a little more than a decade foreign residents in Spain increased rapidly, from 0.28 to 5.22 million inhabitants. Fundamentally this is dealing with an economic immigration of labor. The favorable circumstances of labor supply and demand has driven its increase. Its spatial distribution is very irregular. Its origin is very concentrated. Generally, it has employed large numbers of manual labor, low-skilled, of reduced productivity and concentrated in a few branches of activities. It has contributed and impelled the growth of the Spanish economy. Faced with a radical change in the economic cycle, given the characteristics and the weak roots of the immigrants, opens numerous questions facing its continuity and transformation. All this gives thought that it deals with a phase in the process of finalization. During the coming years one should pay attention to its evolution, integration and possible changes to immigration policies that follow.
