|b Medicinal plants are used in a wide range in Sudan to treat some disease specially diabetes. Little or no data are available about the toxicity and the safe amount of these plants. In this study Plants selected according to questionnaire designed for the purpose of the study which revealed that (57.1%) of Sudanese diabetic patients used Solenstomma hargel leaves and barks, (44.6%) used Trigonella foenum graecum (Fenugreek) seeds and (26.7%) used Lupine turmos to treat diabetes mellitus. The importance of this study was that some plants are toxic when used in higher concentration, it is very important to assess the toxic effect of the plants used traditionally by some patients. The objective of this study is to assess the sub chronic toxicity of the aqueous extract of the selected plants Trigonella foenum graecum (Fenugreek), Lupine turmos and Solenstomma hargel used by Sudanese diabetic patients, on wistar albino rats. Haematological; Serobiochemical and histopathological investigations were taken into consideration for assessing the toxicity of each plant. Forty two males and females Wistar albino rats weighing (80-100 gm) were used in this experiment. Animals were allotted randomly into seven groups (N=6). Group one untreated control, Six groups had been administered with different doses (500 -l000 mg/kg-b.w) of the plants aqueous extract, two groups of each plant, Lots of 3 rats from each group were anaesthetized with diethyl ether and killed at 2 and 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected at slaughter to investigate the hematological and serobiochemical parameters, all rats were examined to identify gross lesions and specimens of the liver, kidneys, heart, spleen and small intestines. All investigated parameters showed no significant difference between the treated groups (different concentration of the plants aqueous extract) and control group, also examined tissue sections showed no specific or significant changes as compared to control. In this study we concluded that for the three plants widely used by Sudanese patients to treat diabetes, no toxic effect has been shown. There were no significant changes in hematological, biochemical and histopathological parameters that resulted from the administration of the studied plants in albino rats indicating that the three plants did not have any toxic manifestations. Sub- chronic toxicity study of them clearly demonstrates the non-toxic nature and safety profile of these plants in Wistar albino rats.
