The work in this thesis includs treatment of the deep color presence in Sodium Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate and this treatment were concerned with the analytical and characterization study for all (in put) and (out put) compounds in LAB production units (Mollex, Pacol, Paraffin, Alkaylation) units, the work can be summarized as follows: • Studying the effect of the number of carbon atom in paraffin section indicates that the linear paraffin section with (C10 - C13) is a perfect section and the presence of (C14) section lead to reducing the LAB purity. • The Gas chromatographic analysis showed the presence of (Iso paraffin, Aromatic, Naphthenes) compounds which were characterized by mass spectra .This study indicated that the presences of these compounds with liner Paraffin section leads to reducing the purity of LAB produced. • Separation and characterization of all (primary, intermediate, final) compounds entering in LAB production were studied and the data obtained from mass spectra and IR spectra gave good indication for the structures of these compounds. • The physical properties for all compounds (in put, intermediate, out put) were measured and the results obtained from density measurement and color gave good indicator about the purity of LAB production. • To study the effect of the presence of aromatic compounds in Paraffin section these compounds were removed from this section using sulfolane and the results reveled that the purity of linear paraffin section was increased. • To insure for the presence of (Iso paraffin, aromatic, naphthene) compounds in (LAB) was accomplished by the separation of sulfonated LAB from non sulfonated LAB were done using a standard procedure .The results obtained from GC mass analysis provide the presence of these compounds in non sulfonated layer and probably these compound could be the main reason for deep color phenomena in solufonated LAB. The fragmentation pattern of paraffin section, olefin section, alkyl benzene component was studied as shown in scheme (3.1-3.3).
