المستخلص: The concept that obesity is an independent risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE) has recently been challenged because the global obesity rate has been increased remarkably for two decades. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that, by 2015, more than 700 million people in the world. The mechanism by which obesity increases the risk of VTE is not fully understood, however the role of Leptin, hyper-coagulation activity and decreased fibrinolysis have been assigned for this association. This study was performed to assess the association between obesity and the increases risk of venous thromboembolism. Science direct, pubMed and web of knowledge databases were searched in order to identify studies that investigated the relationship between obesity and risk of VTE considering citrine criteria such as original articles that been recently polished. After tittle and abstract scanning of all recent studies, four studies were included. The present study found that obesity is an independent risk factor for developing VTE and women with a BMI of more than 35 kg/m2 had 3-4 times higher chance of developing VTE than women with normal BMI.
