المستخلص: Obiectives: This study aims to identify: 1- The illiteracy rate among population according to age, sex, and place of residence. 2- The illiteracy rate among employed persons. 3- The Illiteracy rate among unemployed persons. Data Sources; Population Censuses 1996, 2006 & Labor Force Sample Surveys 2003, 2012. The main findings: 1- The number of illiterate people decreased to 16.1 million in 2012 compared to 17 million in 2006 and 17.6 million in 1996. 2- Illiteracy rate decreased from 39.4% in 1996 to reach 24.9% in 2012 3- The percentage of decline in the illiteracy rate is higher in rural areas compared to urban areas, as it decreased from 26.1% in 1996 to 17.7% in 2012 in urban areas, but in rural areas it decreased from 49.6% in 1996 to 30.7% in 2012. 4- Illiteracy rate decreased more for younger ages compared to the older ages as a result of the increase in the enrollment rate in basic education schools and the other stages of education .The illiteracy rate decreased for the age group (10- 14years) from 16.0% to 2.2% during the period (1996 - 2012). 5- Urban governorates have the lowest illiteracy rate for individuals within the labor force in 2012 as it has ranged between (7.5%-12%). 6- The highest rate of illiteracy for persons within the labor force was for unpaid family workers by 48.6% in 2012 compared to 51.6% in 2003. 7- The highest rate of illiteracy for occasional workers, it was 32.4% in 2012 compared to 47% in 2003, and was much higher for females compared to males in both years. 8- Agricultures workers have the highest illiteracy rate by 53.3% in 2012 and it was for males 43.5% and 72.8 % for females in the same year. 9- The Illiteracy rate for workers outside establishments in the private sector was the highest among all sectors as it was 42.6% in 2012 compared to 51.4% in 2003 and it increased for females compared to males in this sector. 10- Illiteracy rate for the unemployed who have ever worked increased to 8.3% in 2012 compared to 5.2% in 2003, and it was 9.1% for males compared to 1% for females in 2012. 11- The Illiteracy rate for unemployed person who have never worked was 1.5% in 2012 compared to 0.3% in 2003.
