(Religion and State in Sudan: Historical Review): The historic debate on the relation between religion and state which has been resurged after the rise of political Islam in modern Arab and Islamic world was escalated in Sudan after the National Islamic Front seizure of power. Since then, religion has become one of the major issues of debate, mobilization and conflict in Sudan politics. This paper outlines and analyzes the trajectories of the relation between religion and state in Sudan history and present. It further identifies the positions of Sudanese political forces on this issue. The paper shows that the trajectory of the relation between religion and state is characterized by high dynamism and moves in a law-like manner; that is whenever this relation reaches the peak of total link, it moves down to separation and vice versa. The paper argues that, given the increase of regionalism, tribalism and civil war, without a comprehensive solution to the problem of governance, the relation between religion and state could reach a balance but within a confederation and not a unitary one.
