|b In French, there exist two different terms which are used for a profession: "métier" and "profession". The first one represents a manual or technical occupation while the second term describes an intellectual and technical profession. \ The use of one or the other word (“métier” or “profession”) to defend or describe the functions or the identity of archivists or librarians \ can have an effect on the persons we are speaking to, such like friends, employers, members of a management committee or stakeholders. The analysis of results gained from the literature review and internet research showed that archivists and librarians don’t make the difference between the two terms. Due to these observations we wish to make professionals aware of the impact that the use of either of those two terms can have. \ This paper begins with a definition of the two concepts "metier" and "profession". Then the actual status of the archivist and the librarian function is determined, as well as the words the professionals use to describe themselves. In the last part, the importance of choosing the right term is emphasized in order to claim and defend the true status of archivists and librarians.
|d Un corps professionnel est basé sur un statut. Ce dernier peut être distingué de deux manières, soit il s’agit d’un métier, soit d’une profession. L’utilisation de l’un ou de l’autre terme pour défendre et décrire les fonctions et l’identité d’archiviste et bibliothécaire peut avoir une influence sur leurs interlocuteurs, que ce soient des amis, mais également des employeurs, des membres de la direction d’une institution, voire des partenaires financiers. Nos explorations dans la littérature professionnelle et sur internet démontrent que la distinction entre ces deux concepts n’est pas prise en compte. Fort de ce constat, nous souhaitons rendre les professionnels de ces domaines attentifs à l’impact que revêt l’utilisation de ces termes. \ Cet article débutera par la définition d’une profession par rapport à un métier, puis nous déterminerons le statut de l’archiviste et du bibliothécaire, ainsi que les mots utilisés par ceux-ci pour le décrire. Dans la troisième et dernière partie, nous évoquerons l’importance d’employer les bons termes afin de revendiquer et défendre leur véritable statut.
