|b The Ottoman Empire, which dominated vast expanse of lands that stretched as far as the Arabian Gulf in the first quarter of the 16th century, was faced with Portuguese rivalry and had to share the Gulf with them. After long disputes, the Ottoman State, which took advantage of the religious creed of the local inhabitants who were Muslims, succeeded in subjugating the entire region under Suleiman the Magnificent. It established its own administrative organizations in certain regions while choosing to entrust the administrative affairs of the country they had conquered with local people who had pledged allegiance.
