المستخلص: This paper examines how information is structured in declarative sentences in Colloquial Cairene Arabic. The role of intonation is studied in a corpus of recorded data in relation to the change of focus type and position in the sentence. The effect of the change in word order on the sentence intonation is also examined. Three experiments were conducted to validate the research hypothesis that intonation plays a major role in the structuring of information. The results of the experimental study show that information structure can be realised by intonation alone if the sentence is syntactically unmarked. If the sentence undergoes a change in word order, i.e. it is syntactically marked, the role of intonation is reduced but still has optional prosodic effects on the production of the sentence.
