|b There is a number of lexemes in English that constitute euphemism, taboo or avoidance items in the language. These items people avoid using in polite society, either because they believe them harmful or feel them embarrassing or offensive. The possibility of harm may exist in the case of notions to do with death and the supernatural or discomfort deriving from superstitious beliefs. Embarrassment tends to be associated with the sexual act and its consequences, while, offensiveness relates to various substances excuded by the body, and to the different forms of the physical, mental and social abnormality . Thus it appears that there Is a sort of tacit agreement between people on when, where and how to make explicit what is prohibited in use among them
