الأدب نشاط وثيق الصلة بالحياة والحضارة، فليس ثمة حضارة بلا آداب أو فنون، والمتأمل للحالة الأدبية لدينا يجد أنماطا أدبية، ومدارس نقدية، يقف خلفها رؤى وأيدلوجيات متنوعة، وإذ يمثل الشعر ظاهرة فنية عريقة، صاحبت الحياة البشرية منذ وقت مبكر من تاريخها، فإنه لا يخرج عن قانون التطور أيا كان زمانه ومكانه، ولا يمكنه أن يتوقف عن التطور، وقد كان شعر الزهد في أوضح صورة وأجل معانيه وفي مختلف مظاهره وتعدد مراميه لا يخرج عن كونه نزعة روحية ظهرت بشكل أوضح في العصر العباسي طبعت صورته بطابع خاص فيه فهو ليس ظاهرة جديدة، إنما هو من عصر الصحابة، ثم العصر الأموي الذي برز فيه الكثير من القصاص والوعاظ الذين في أشعارهم بوادر للزهد، ولكنه في العصر العباسي أصبح الشعر الذي ينظم فنا بذاته. والزهد اتجاه يهدف للابتعاد عن الدنيا والالتزام بالعبادات، لذا كان من الطبيعي أن تظهر أصداؤه على آلسنة الكثير من أدباء ذلك الوقت وحمل لنا الأدب تيارات متنوعة منه وعبر الأدباء عن مشاعرهم فأنتجوا لنا الكثير مما هذبت فيه النفوس وارتاحت إليه القلوب وشغف الناس بقراءة قصائده وإنشادها وكانت محاولات التجديد فيه أكثر شمولا وتأثيرا. ولقد حظي موضوع الزهد بدراسات أدبية كثيرة على مر العصور، فمنهم من درسه موضوعا مستقلا، ومنهم من درسه مرتبطا بالتصوف، والبحث إذ يستكمل جهود السابقين، فإنه يبين أهمية الموضوع لاسيما أنه قد كان لاحتفاء الدارسين والباحثين بظاهرة الزهد وتمثلهم لها ودراستها أثر في إثراء الساحة النقدية ببحوث مهمة، والسؤال الذي يطرح نفسه: لماذا احتفوا بظاهرة الزهد؟ وهل استطاعوا تحديد البدايات الأولى له؟ وما الدوافع التي أدت إلى نشوئه وتطوره في العصر العباسي؟ وسأركز في هذا البحث على الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة فضلا عن التعريف بأبرز أعلام الزهد وعرض بعض نماذجهم الشعرية وتحليلها على وفق منهج وصفي تحليلي معتمدة على استقراء النصوص وعرضها وذلك كله سيكون من خلال المقدمة والمطالب المكونة للبحث والخاتمة.
