A metaphor is a statement characterising one thing in terms of another, juxtaposing concepts from separate domains of experience. Metaphor can be used to describe abstract or unfamiliar topics, and to express ideas difficult to convey with literal language. In the present paper, the attempt is made to capture a full view of how conceptual metaphors are processed cognitively. This is carried out by following the way from the traditional approaches to the interpretation of metaphors through to the arrival at the cognitive approach, proposed by Johnson and Lakoff (1980), to the task thereof. To achieve this, the explanation and processing of metaphors within religious texts from both English and Arabic are investigated by making reference to the GOOD-UP vs. BAD-DOWN conceptual metaphors in the Holy Bible and the Glorious Quran
