Teaching the Speech Act of Compliment Response to University Students of English

المستخلص: This study is a socio-pragmatic investigation in the speech act of compliment response used by first-year students at the Department of English, College of Education, University of Mosul in the academic year 2011-2012. It also investigates the effectiveness of three selected methods namely: Traditional method, Culture -puzzle method and Audio¬visual method as well as the investigation of the interaction between the method and gender. The population of the study consist of all the male and female first-year students enrolled into six groups: Al, A2, Bl, B2, Cl, C2 for the academic year 2011- 2012, Department of English, University of Mosul. The sample of the study consists of 57 first-year students(29 males and 28 females). To verify the posed hypotheses, an experiment has been designed where the three groups assigned as EG1.EG2 and CG have 21,19,17 individual subjects in succession chosen randomly from the First -year students and all have been taught compliment response; they have been taught by culture -puzzle method, audio-visual and the traditional method in succession. For data collection, the researcher.; have constructed a Discourse Completion Test. It has been administered to measure the students' progress concerning the three dependent variables of the research. Test validity and reliability have been confirmed by a number of experts. The researchers used Hudson's rating criteria: the ability to use the correct speech act, typical expressions, amount of speech used and information given, levels of formality, politeness and directness as an instrument adopted in analysing data. It is obvious that culture- puzzle method is more favourable than the other two methods for developing pragmatic competence in speech act of compliment response. It is also concluded that culture -puzzle method is a useful method for teaching compliment response for females. Regarding the interaction between gender and methods, all the groups work independently.
