المستخلص: Debates about exports being a tool for promoting economic growth are endless. Some studies claim that export promotion is the driving force behind the growth of any nation (Export-led Growth Hypothesis). A counterargument is that an export promotion policy cannot be adopted without other complementary investments are undertaken in advance. In other words, growth leads to higher exports and not vice versa (Growth-led Exports Hypothesis). This paper aims at analyzing the export performance in the Egyptian economy and its potential impact on growth and development. The first part of the paper surveys the literature about theories and arguments about export-led development. The second part of the paper explores different approaches to export development. While the third part of the paper discuses Egypt’s economic and trade profile in. addition to Egypt’s trade liberalization efforts. Finally, the paper provides, an empirical model that examines whether exports and growth are co-integrated or not.
