The present paper tries to study the discoursal conceptsas presented by (Imam Al-shafi’i in his Risala’, i.e Message. This is why the paper carries the title ‘the Discorsal Dimensions in ‘Al-Risala’ of Imam Al-shafi’i. It tackles pragmatic principles in general. This has been done by referring to Imam Shafi’i s pragmatic references and ideas that go well with this field of knowledge. This thesis sheds light on the principles of pragmatics that could be found in Al-Imama Al-Shafiyi's 'Al-Risala'. This work is divided into an introduction and four chapters. The introduction deals with how pragmatics evolved and the relations of pragmatics to semantics. It points out the areas of similarities and differences between these two fields in dealing with meaning. Here the views of the concerned scholars over this relation are presented in order to reach a clearer understanding of pragmatics and semantics. The first chapter is devoted to dealing with the role of participants in speech, i.e. the speaker and the addressee, and the principle of cooperation and its relevant phenomena. For example, how to use language and the importance of this in explaining meaning and speech requirements, which emerges in Imam Shafiyi's dealing with rhetoric devices. The second chapter deals with discourse. It specifically explains discourse analysis as a way of understanding religious laws. This is the best area where Imam Shafiyi's pragmatic handling of things is manifested. It also embarks on the speech acts, specially request and order, in this work of Imam Shafiy. The last part is a conclusion which outlines the most outstanding findings.
