Despite the many successes accomplished by the Health professions education in Saudi Arabia, over the last fifty years, there have been concerns related to its quality. The recent massive involvement of for-profit private sector, responding to the increasing demand for higher education and healthcare professionals, makes these concerns more evident, particularly when the general strategy to control the quality of this system’s output is not clearly stated. Thus, this essay attempts to propose solutions for this dilemma, through reviewing the development of health professions education in Saudi Arabia, and compare it to its counterpart in United States. Proposed solution includes establishing a national professional agency responsible for overseeing the quality of health professions education and its outputs, and representing all stakeholders.
