المستخلص: The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of using a suggested program of English macro patterns on the coherence of 1st year EFL Majors' writing and their reading comprehension at the New Valley Faculty of Education, Assiut University. The study had a one group pretest-posttest design. A group of thirty two 1st year EFL majors participated in this study. Tools used in the this study included a training program for developing 1st year EFL majors’ knowledge of English macro patterns and consequently enhancing the coherence of their writing and their reading comprehension, a pre-post English macro patterns achievement test for measuring knowledge of macro patterns, a pre-post writing test for measuring coherence of writing and a pre-post reading comprehension test. The study predicted that subjects’ post assessment mean- scores would be significantly higher than pre-assessment mean-scores on the English macro patterns achievement test, the writing test and on the reading comprehension test. The experiment lasted two months.“ T” test for small samples was used to analyze the difference between means of scores of the study subjects in the pre and the post-assessments. Results revealed that there was an increase in the knowledge of English macro patterns as well as in both the coherence of writing and the reading comprehension among the study subjects.
