This article explores the relationship between the content of ESP materials, on the one hand, and the English language needs of local industries, on the other. An exploratory study by means of an e-mail questionnaire was undertaken into the types and sources of materials used by teachers in their ‘Business English’ class, Replies indicated that the majority of teachers used one of the commercially available textbooks to teach the ‘Business English’ class. An examination of the contents of one such textbook shows the extent to which these ‘global’ materials can fall short of meeting students’ specific needs. The findings underline the importance of supplementing these textbooks and the need for developing instructional materials which would be more geared to ‘local’ needs. The study aims al answering one fundamental question : how suitable are the commercially available textbooks for preparing our students for the workplace?
