|b This study attempts to identify the socio-economic determinants such as; maternal education and occupation, standard of living and urbanization that have significant effect on infant and under-five mortality rates. To analyze these determinants two regression models were estimated using Sudan Safe Motherhood Survey (SMS, 1999) data. The results of the study suggest that among all the variables analyzed in the study, maternal education is the most significant determinant of infant and under-five mortality rates in the Sudan. The results also revealed that while standard of living and urbanization have a negative impact on child survival, which may be attributed to internal displacement and immigration of the people due to war or inequality in wealth distribution, maternal occupation has no effect on infant and under-five mortality. Based on the above results, there is need for the expansion of education opportunities, particularly for girls. Also provide support to adult education programs priority should be given to women.
