|b India is a most important energy consumer worldwide, and energy is a fundamental factor that shapes its policy towards the African continent. Like other oil-dependent countries, India faces serious problems securing regular oil provisions. Strategic oil producers in many parts of the world have in the last few years been the subject of fierce competitions between major industrial powers, let alone that some such producers are unstable. This impelled India to seek new oil markets, hence the African continent seems to be quite appropriate. India has adopted different strategies to achieve its oil policy. For instance, it proposed to provide some African countries with economic development aids. However, to the disappointment of India, which is not the only oil-seeking power in the continent, it faces fierce competitions from a number of industrial powers such as China, France, and the United States. Such competition has obliged India in some cases to reconsider its policy and even its alliances as it wanted to preserve its oil interests in the African continent
