This study examines the use of implicature in some interviews of the U.K. Prime Ministers John Major and Tony Blair on Middle East issues. A review of related literature is made to give an overview of the nature of Grice's theory of implicature and its application to political discourse. The study provides two analyses of the data: statistics-based analysis and context-based analysis. The analysis of the data illustrates how implicature plays a great role in persuading the audience of the prime ministers' ideologies reflected in their interviews. It also suggests that both leaders tend to lie and exaggerate to achieve persuasion. |
