يتعرض البحث لوجود الحيوان في إحدى قصص أوراثيو كيروجا بعنوان "خوان دارين" حيث يظهر الشكل البدائي من خلال تجربة التحول التي يتعرض لها نمر يتحول إلى بشر، وكما يحدث في أدب الحيوان، وفي قصص التحول (المسخ) يجري التعبير عن الصراعات والتحديات التي يواجها الإنسان في حياته. ولكن نجد أن الاختلاف الذي يميز أدب المسخ هو عملية التحول ذاتها والتي تتفق وأسلوب كيروجا السردي. ويتعمق الكاتب في الطبيعة المجردة البدائية لكي يكشف عن التحديات التي يصعب معها تحديد الهوية البشرية. وفي حالة قصة "خوان دارين" نجد أن الكاتب يدخل بعض التعديلات على الشكل التقليدي لأدب المسخ وهي تغيرات ترجع إلى استخدام الواقعية السحرية لإبراز دور المكان (منطقة الغابات في شمال غرب قارة أمريكا الجنوبية) وأهميته في حياة أهل المنطقة.
The paper analyzes animal representation in Horacio Quiroga’s short story, “Juan Darien”, which depicts the metamorphic transformation of a tiger into a human child. As in all animal literature, Quiroga’s metamorphic story expresses the conflicts and ordeals that human beings are pitted against. However, the major distinguishing factor that characterizes Quirago’s narrative of metamorphosis is its ingenious portrayal of the process of metamorphosis itself, which is an integral part of Quirago’s narrative enterprise. Quirago delves into the deep wells of primitive human nature in order to unearth the forces that challenge the definition of human identity. In “Juan Darien”, he introduces a set of modifications, which are not present in the original metamorphic format, over the process of metamorphic transformation. Such modifications resort to magic realism in order to foreground the importance of space (the setting of the Forest in North West Latin America) as both an integral structural element in the narrative of his story and a crucial element in the life of aboriginal citizens. The paper sets out to examine Quirago’s narrative modifications together with his employment of magic realism which foregrounds space rather than the fantastic in the story under study.
