Spacer fabric is a novel kind of 3D textile structure consisting of two separate outer layers that are joined together but kept apart by spacer yarns. This type of fabrics can be manufactured by warp knitting, weft knitting, and weaving. This paper presents an experimental investigation on physical and sewing properties of weft knitted spacer fabrics. Air permeability and bursting strength was chosen to characterize physical properties of this type of fabrics. Effects of fabric weight on these physical properties were examined. Effects of fabric weight, stitch density and the type of sewing thread on Bursting strength at sewing line and seam strength for this type of fabric were also investigated. The findings of this study revealed that fabric weight has a positive and negative effect respectively on bursting strength and air permeability for this type of fabric. Stitch density was found to have a direct relation to bursting strength at sewing line, while fabric of weight 310 g/m2 gave the highest values of bursting strength at sewing line. It is also concluded that stitch density and fabric weight has a direct influence on seam strength of weft knitted spacer fabrics. The obtained results can provide the producers and users some useful information for this new knitted fabrics development.
