لما كانت مشكلة البيئة من المشكلات المتشابكة التي يصعب تنظيمها من خلال التشريعات فقط، حيث أنها في الأساس مسألة تربوية سلوكية، فإن الحل الأمثل لمواجهتها والمحافظة على البيئة وحمايتها يكمن في حسن تنشئة الإنسان المتفهم لبيئته، والمدرك لظروفها، والواعي لما يواجهها من مشكلات وما يتهددها من أخطار، والقادر على أن يسهم في حمايتها وصيانتها عن رغبة واقتناع. وتبدو أهمية وسائل الإعلام في نشر الوعي البيئي بين الأفراد، حيث تتميز بقدرتها الفائقة على نشر الوعي البيئي بين أفراد المجتمع، بما تملكه من تقنيات حديثة وقدرة على الوصول إلى القطاع الأوسع من المجتمع في الوقت ذاته بهدف تعديل السلوك والاتجاه نحو البيئة، حيث أن الوسائل الإعلامية وحدها هي القادرة على إحداث هذا التغير لدى الفرد، من خلال تصحيح المفاهيم البيئية، وتوجيه الأفراد نحو الحفاظ على البيئة من التلوث. وتزداد أهمية الوعي البيئي وغرس المفاهيم البيئية لدى الأطفال حيث أن التربية البيئية وتعليم مفاهيمها الصحيحة في الصغر من الموضوعات الهامة التي يجب أن تهتم بها جميع الوسائط التربوية والتي منها بالتأكيد وسائل الإعلام. ويمثل الإعلام البيئي أحد الأجنحة الرئيسية التي تعتمد عليها الجهود المبذولة في التعريف والتوعية بتلك القضايا خاصة التلفزيون "والقنوات الفضائية أحد أشكاله" وقد أثار من المناقشات والجدل العلمي أضعاف ما أثارته وسائل الإعلام الأخرى، ومن خلال تلك المناقشات يتحدد موقع التلفزيون في عملية التأثير وتبادل المعاني في المجتمع. في هذا الإطار استهدفت الدراسة أن تتناول بالتحليل الدور الذي تقوم به برامج الأطفال في تلفزيون أبو ظبي – قناة الإمارات – من خلال تضمين مفاهيم التربية البيئية للأطفال في تلك البرامج ومدى التوعية التي تقدمها لهم باعتبارها أداة من أدوات الحصول على المعلومات والوعي بشتى مجالاته، أي مدى التعرف على ما تقدمه مضامين برامج الأطفال من معالجات بيئية لمواجهة المشكلات البيئية.
