The study dealt with the Place names in the locality of Managel. The approach is a new - born branch of Geography which is expected to be multidisciplinary field of knowledge supported by Historical, Archeological, Anthropological ,linguistic investigating techniques ,in addition to other sciences .Managel locality ,was chosen ,for the reasons of its unique location in the western part of Gazira state ,surrounded by White ,Blue and main Niles realms .Since immemorial time and during the Nubian civilization, the era of Al Fung Sultanate, Turkish and Condominium periods different tribes and ethnic groups from Savannah , Nile region and Arabian Peninsula penetrated the area and coined multiplicity of place names. During the stage of cultural isolation and self-sufficiency Agro-pastoral economy, the majority of names were related to the elements of natural and cultural systems as; flora, fauna, water resources, tribal’s, community leaders or founders and religious sheikhs. When the Managel Irrigation Scheme was established in 1958 as an extension to Al Gazira Scheme, applying the same system, a new generation of place names emerged as response to the technological transformation and change in the quality of lives. Data has been collected via field research and personal interview with elders and public stories that explained there are two types of villages, firstly old villages were emerged in the period of self-sufficiency agro-pastoral economy depended mainly on rainfalls, secondly new ones (146 villages) which were emerged after year 1958 with names related to administration, political events, and optimistic feelings, in addition to names derived from English and West African languages. One of the main targets of this article is to encourage this field of Geographic investigation.
يهتم هذا البحث بتحليل أسماء الأماكن في محلية المناقل التابعة لولاية الجزيرة، وهو منهج جديد في علم الجغرافيا أوشك أن يكون حقلاً للمعرفة تسهم فيه علوم مثل التاريخ والآثار والأنثروبولوجيا واللغويات وغيرها. تم اختيار هذه المنطقة نسبة لموقعها المتوسط بين عوالم النيلين الأزرق والأبيض ولأنها منذ القدم محط تلاقي ثقافات عديدة تركت بصماتها على أسماء الأمكنة. في فترة العزلة الثقافية والاقتصاد المعاشي الزراعي الرعوي سادت الأسماء المرتبطة بالبيئة الطبيعية والحضارية من نبات وحيوان طبيعي وتربة وموارد مياه وأسماء قبائل وقادة مجتمع وشيوخ دينيين وحين أنشئ مشروع المناقل في عام 1958 فإن النقلة التكنولوجية والتغيير في أساليب الحياة ظهرت قرى حديثة أصبحت أسماؤها مرتبطة بالتغيرات الحديثة بالمنطقة من نظام ري وتغيرات اجتماعية واقتصادية. تم جمع المعلومات عبر البحث الميداني والمقابلات الشخصية مع كبار السن والقصص الشعبية وتبين وجود مجموعتين من القرى هي القديمة التي نشأت في فترة الاقتصاد الاكتفائي الزراعي الرعوي المرتكز على الأمطار والقرى الحديثة التي نشأت بعد 1958 حين أنشئ مشروع المناقل كامتداد لمشروع الجزيرة وعلى غراره ظهرت 146 قرية جديدة وانبثق جيل جديد من المسميات التي تشير إلى الإدارة الزراعية والأحداث السياسية وتلك التي تعبر عن مشاعر التفاؤل، كذلك فإن بعض المسميات مستمدة من اللغة الإنجليزية ولغات غرب أفريقيا. كان البحث عرضاً عاماً يراد منه جذب اهتمام الباحثين لتحليل أكثر عمقاً ودقة.
