جاءت الأزمة الاقتصادية العالمية بمآسي عديدة كان لها آثارها السلبية على الواقع الفرنسي، نتيجة لانتشار البطالة وتخفيض أجور العمال وتردي أحوال الفلاحين والمزارعين الفرنسيين، كان لذلك أثر بالغ على توجهات الفرنسيين إذ مال غالبية الرأي العام الفرنسي نحو اليسار، وتمثل الميل بتعاظم معاضدة الجماهير الشعبية الكادحة والوسطى أيضاً للحزب الاشتراكي الردايكالي. لم تكن الأزمة الاقتصادية وأثارها القاسية السبب المباشر لتشكيل الجبهة الشعبية، بل رافق ذلك تغلغل الأفكار الفاشية داخل المجتمع الفرنسي الرافض في غالبيته لمثل تلك الأفكار، وكان ذلك إيذاناً لبدء سلسلة من الإضرابات وتشكيل لجان الكفاح المسلح للتصدي من تلك الأفكار وأبعادها، والسؤال الذي يطرح هنا بأنه هل أسهمت أو أثرت تلك الإضرابات التي قادها الشعب الفرنسي ضد الفاشية إلى بناء جبهة شعبية موحدة تجتمع حولها فئات الشعب الكادحة؟. وهنا برز دور الجبهة الشعبية الموحدة التي كان لها دوراً واضحاً وبارزاً في تاريخ فرنسا الحديث إذ تمكنت من فرض نفسها وبإرادة جماهيرية خلال السنوات 1936-1938 رغم الأوضاع غير المستقرة التي كان المجتمع الفرنسي قد عاشها. وكانت البوادر الأولى لها تتمثل بالعزم والإصرار الذي سارت عليه المنظمات العمالية فضلاً عن المساندة المطلقة التي حظيت بها الجبهة من قبل الشيوعيين الذين كانوا الداعمين الأساسيين والرئيسيين للجبهة الشعبية الفرنسية. تأتي أهمية البحث الذي يسلط الضوء على الدور المهم الذي قامت به الجبهة الشعبية الفرنسية، ومراحل تطور تلك الجبهة حتى وصولها إلى الحكم رغم كل الصعوبات التي تعرضت لها الجبهة الشعبية والتي تم التطرق لها في ثنايا البحث.
