The official relations between Morocco and West African countries are always described as historically rooted, brotherly, strong and distinctive. The commonalities between Morocco and West African countries include common geographic position; close histories, ideologies and religions; and common political, economic and investment interests. Morocco’s move towards Africa is determined by immediate and urgent economic demands in light of current economic crisis in Europe, Africa’s main partner. Another determinant is Morocco’s need to return to Africa in cultural, humanitarian, political and economic terms, away from constraining political agendas and the international scramble for Africa carried from the Cold War era. A third determinant is the Western Sahara problem which is likely to come soon to an end with a political solution acceptable to all various parties. Morocco has been aware of the compelling political and security conditions and their impact on its access to the African continent and representation in the Organization of African Union. It is also concerned about certain economic issues, such as China’s South Africa’s economic expansions in the region, which require highlighting Morocco’s economic approach towards the region. In addition, Morocco’s religious diplomacy plays a pivotal role in consolidating its influence in West Africa and the Sahel. Royal visits have helped give a real momentum to enhance political, economic and cultural relations, and resulted in concluding agreements in economic, technical, social, cultural and religious fields, as well as human development |
