اكتسى البحث طابعا هادفا يراد به الوصول إلى مجموعة من القيم الإنسانية التي ارتبطت بحياة الإنسان ونزعته الفطرية؛ حيث كان له تقييم ثابت وواضح لبعض الصفات السيئة كالكذب؛ والغش؛ والسرقة؛ وغيرها، وقد رفضها بفطرته السليمة موضحاً ارتباط صلاح أفعاله بصلاح أخلاقه. لذا نهج المصلحون ومشرعو العراق القديم بإصدار منظومة من القوانين والشرائع منها (أورنمو، لبت عشتار، أشنونا حمورابي) لغرس معاني الخير والشر، ولحفظ كرامة الإنسان وأمنه. ولأهمية ذلك الموضوع فقد رغبت بالكتابة حوله بمنهجية علمية تحليلية، يراعى فيها أهمية القيم الإنسانية في حياة الإنسان من خلال قانون حمورابي، لما له أثر في تنظيم وتعزيز السلوك البشري، للارتقاء بالمجتمع إلى الإنسانية والمدنية. ولذا فقد اعتبر قانون حمورابي أهم مرجع قانوني قديم جمع فيه كافة القوانين والأعراف السومرية والاكادية، وطورها بما يتلاءم مع المتغيرات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية، وأبرز فيه مقومات الحياة المدنية القائمة على إحقاق العدل، وإنصاف المظلوم، ومعاقبة الظالم، وقيادة شعبه للاستقرار والأمن، وقد تنوع العدل من خلال متطلبات الحياة منها (القانوني، والأسري، والاقتصادي). ومن أهم تلك القيم: العفة التي هي حفظ النفس عن الرذيلة، واقتصار العلاقة الزوجية على حدود الشرع، كما شدد على أن تكون تلك العلاقة قائمه على الثقة والاحترام، وللحد من الزنا فقد تنوعت العلاقات ما بين (محرمة، وشاذة، واضطرارية). الصدق والنزاهة: تجلت بوضوح في قانون حمورابي في كافة المجالات والتعاملات الحياتية، وقد برزت في مجالات منها (القضاء، والطب، والجيش).
