|a استحثت المدينة النبوية بخصوصيتها الدينية وأهميتها الحضارية المؤرخين أن يعنوا برصد كل ما تشمله من خطط وآثار ومعالم حضارية وجغرافية، هذا فضلاً عن الوقائع والأحداث السياسية المتعلقة بها. وممن عنوا بالتأريخ لهذه الجوانب للمدينة النبوية، واحد من رواد مؤرخيها وهو محمد بن يحيى المدني المتوفي نهاية القرن الثاني أو بداية القرن الثالث الهجري، وذلك من خلال كتابه المفقود "أخبار المدينة المنورة"، ولما تبين للباحث بأنه لا يوجد من سبقه إلى دراسة هذا الموضوع، كان ذلك دافعاً على اختياره ليكون محلاً للبحث والدراسة.
