للفصاحة في الاصطلاح العربي معنيان : الفصاحة البيانية، وهي عبارة عن قدرة المتكلم على إنشاء كلام مؤثر في السامع، والفصاحة اللغوية، وهي التي نجدها عند النحاة واللغويين، وتعني عندهم عدم اللحن الناتج عن الاختلاط بالأمم الأخرى . ولما بحث اللغويون والنحاة عن هذه الفصاحة لم يجدوها إلا عند الأعراب، ولهذا قاموا بتحديد رقعتها زمانا ومكانا، فزمانا استمرت الفصاحة في العرب منذ اكتشاف أول نص في العربية إلى أواخر القرن الرابع للهجرة، ومكانا استبعد الرواة القبائل الحضرية، وكذا القبائل المتاخمة للأعاجم، ولم يأخذوا اللغة إلا من الأعراب القاطنين في بوادي نجد والحجاز. أما ربطهم الفصاحة بالجنس العربي، فلا أساس له من الصحة، إذ لم نجد نحويا واحدا ربط الفصاحة بالجنس العربي، بل ربطوها بالمنشأ اللغوي، وقد وجدناهم أخذوا عن الكثير من العبيد السود. وبالجملة فمنهج النحاة العرب القدماء منهج علمي تؤيده المناهج اللسانية الحديثة التي تعني بما يسمى بالمدونة المغلقة.
Eloquence (fasāhah) in the technical usage of Arabic linguists has two meanings: 1. Expressive eloquence which is the capacity of the speaker to create a speech that impacts the listeners. 2. Linguistics eloquence which is mostly talked about by grammarians and linguistics. It means to speak correctly without committing grammatical mistakes as a result of mixing with different language communities. When linguistics and grammarians sought eloquence (fasāhah) as explained above they found it only with the Bedouins and they, therefore, fixed the area of its existence both in tome and Space. In time, eloquence starts with the Arabic text ever discovered and extends over until the late 4th century of the Hijra. In space, the Arab linguists excluded urbanized tribes as well as tribes neighbouring non-Arabian peoples, and transmitted Arabic language only from Arab Bedouins living in the desert areas of Najd and Hijāz The claim that eloquence was linked to the Arab race is therefore baseless, as there is simple Arab gramnarian linking it to Arabs as a race. Rather. Arab grammarians linked eloquence to the environment in which a person is brought up and taught the language Hence, we find them transmitting Arabic language from many blacks slaves. Generally speaking, classical Arab grammarians followed a scientific method that is supported by modern linguistic methodology concerned about what is known as “closed register".
