This study investigates the subject of national discourse in contemporary Persian literature, which emerged in the nineteenth century and gained paramount salience in the twentieth century—under the influence of nationalism and politics—and at the hands of a number of Persian literary writers and intellectuals, particularly at the time of the reign of the Bahlawi family, namely, Rida Al-Bahlawi and his son Shah Iran (1925-1979). Since the second half of the nineteenth century and the early days of the twentieth century, some literary writers and intellectuals appeared in Iran representing such a trend, e.g., Ali Akhound Zadah, Agha Khan Al-Karmani, Ahmad Kisrawi, Ibrahim Bour Dawoud, Dabeeh Allah Bahrouz, Aref Al-Qazwini, Meirzadah Eshqi, Sadiq Hidayat, Mahdi Ikhwan Thalith, Nader Nader Bour, and Abdul Hussien Zurein Koub. Given that Sadiq Hidayat was the most famous Persian literary writer in the twentieth century, and since national discourse was quite evident in his treatments, this study takes Sadiq Hidayat as a case study in order to examine this phenomenon. This is so as national discourse was extremely salient in most of his studies and traces, and Persian nationalism and identity were quite evident for this prolific writer, who was infatuated with nationalism, racism, chauvinism and hatred for Arabs and Islam. He was also filled with despair, pessimism and melancholy, which eventually drove him to the tragic end, i.e., suicide. National discourse in the contemporary Persian literature was closely connected to nationalism and Iranian identity, which prevailed at the time, and to the ideological discourse which was the focus of the Bahlawi statehood. Based on all of this, we see that this kind of discourse represents the other face of the phenomenon of hatred for Arabs in contemporary Persian literature. The study stresses that national discourse can be divided into two types: the first is associated with the praise and deification of the Persian-ari race, and the second is concerned with degrading and demonizing of the Semitic Arab race. The aim of this was to reinforce nationalism and to give more recognition to the Iranian identity through racial discrimination, ethnic cleansing, denying and despising the other, tarnishing the image of the other, and hijacking the character of the other. All of this was quite evident in the traces of the pessimistic writer, Sadiq Hidayat, the subject of this study.
