تكمن أهمية هذه الرواية – محل الدراسة – في مشكلة "الاغتصاب" التي تطرحها الكاتبة، وما يترتب عليها من نتائج نفسية واجتماعية، وأنها تخترق الجدار السميك الذي يحيط بالمجتمع المتدين الحريدي تحديدا. الرواية لا تتناول موضوعا دينيا، وإنما ترصد واقعا وتكشف غطاء يخفي وراءه الكثير، وتلقي الضوء على أحكام الشريعة اليهودية ومدى تطبيقها في الواقع المعيش. أن الشخصية المحورية في الرواية تعيش أزمة، بعد تعرضها للاغتصاب – من قبل لص وهو شاب أسود – وخاصة أنها زوجة حاخام لطائفة حريدية تعيش في بروكلين، فتلجأ إلى الشريعة والتشريع اليهودي للبحث فيهما عن الحكم الذي ينطبق عليها وعلى حالتها؛ إلا أنها لا تجد بوضوح الحكم الذي يحدد حالتها وحكمها. فتلتزم الصمت وتقرر عدم إخبار زوجها بأمرها كي لا يطلقها وفقا لما فهمته من الحكم الوارد – حكم المرأة المغتصبة – في الشريعة اليهودية وتتناول الرواية أيضا مسألة "نسب" الابن الذي تلده المرأة التي تعرضت للاغتصاب. تحاول الرواية الإجابة عن تلك التساؤلات السابقة من منظور التشريع اليهودي..
