المستخلص: The purpose of this study is to test whether the red thermoluminescence (TL) emission from natural sedimentary quartz can be used for dating the time of deposition of very old sediment deposits. The samples under study are from a series of stranded beach ridges in the South East of South Australia (SESA). Applications of red thermoluminescence dating to Quaternary Earth Science are reviewed. As a part of a characterization study of TL of quartz, we have analyzed the 3D spectra of Woakwine quartz extracted from beach dunes in South Australia in order to investigate the intensity of the natural red TL from a sample of known palaeodose, and to confirm the wavelength and temperature at which the principal red TL glow peak occurs. The “Australian Slide method” has been used in order to determine the Equivalent Dose (ED). This approach requires the measurement of (i) the additive dose growth curve, (ii) the regenerative dose growth curve, and also (iii) an estimate of the residual TL level at the time of deposition of the sediment. The appropriate residual level was determined by exposing a set of Woakwine quartz grains to natural sunlight in order to reduce their signal (“bleaching”). The purpose of the red TL bleaching experiment is twofold: firstly, to confirm that the red TL signal dose indeed bleach; secondly, after showing that it does bleach, it is necessary to determine how much TL remains after a prolonged bleach in nature to enable estimation of the “residual TL” level, needed for accurate age calculation. Then, the age of Woakwine quartz has been calculated.
