|a Background The premarital screening programme has been applied in Saudi Arabia since 2004. The programme outcomes showed high incompatible marriages rate. However, little is known about the factors affecting the incompatible couples’decision to get married or cancel their marriage after receiving positive results. AimTo explore incompatible couples’ decision to marry or not to marry following a positive result in PMS from the women’s perspectives and genetic counsellors’ viewpoint. MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted with two sample groups. First, women who had the premarital screening and received a positive screening result. Second, genetic counsellors who are working in the premarital screening programme and work closely with incompatible couples. Five women interviews and five genetic counsellors’ interviews were conducted in September and October 2012. Results When couples are identified as incompatible, the decision to get married or not is influenced by several factors. It seemed that social and religious factors make it easier for couples to get married and accept the risk of having children with medical conditions. In addition, couples seemed to have very little knowledge about the test and the diseases it test for. Moreover, counselling has been identified to be very weak and with a limited effect on the couple and their marriage decision. All of this suggested a poor effect of the test results on couples’ decision. ConclusionsThis study highlighted several factors effecting couples decision to get married regardless of the test results. These factors should be employed in favour of the premarital screening programme in order to improve its outcomes.
