المستخلص: Paediatric oncology patient management involves transfusion therapy as the main way of dealing with haematological abnormalities due to malignancies. Most drugs used in the management of cancer in paediatric oncology patients end up affecting the production of the blood cells in the bone marrow. Some of the blood cells produced while a patient is suffering from haematological disorders are not able to function normally. Blood and blood product transfusion is a method that is associated with the need for safety and precaution, as well as effectiveness of implementation. Different countries have adopted standard protocols for blood and blood product transfusion. This study involved secondary collection of data from relevant journals, web sites and texts. The information collected focuses on common blood products involved in the management of cancer in children. This also applies to children who are also suffering from blood-related diseases, mainly leukaemia and anaemia. Various types of cancers affecting children were recorded. Data on the distribution of cancer according to race, age, sex and ethnicity in the USA, the UK and other countries were collected. The survival time from the year of diagnosis of cancer among male and female paediatric oncology patients was also noted. Transfusion reactions associated with paediatric oncology patients were analysed, specifically the side effects of iron overload. The information collected was presented in the form of tables and used to generate appropriate conclusions about the study.
