المستخلص: Conflicts between different groups are an important human issue which no community can either avoid or ignore. Conflicts can either remain unresolved resulting in violence and war or they can be dealt with properly، leading to peace. Successful conflict resolution requires exceptional diplomatic skills and great wisdom. \ This study focuses on the traditional methods of arbitrating conflicts among the Beja people of Eastern Sudan. The study shows how the history، culture and traditional ways of life of the Beja have formed their notion of “seeliif” or traditional unwritten laws which are the basis of arbitrating all conflicts. \ The traditional tribal leaders of the Beja are those who have proven themselves to be skillful in preventing conflicts. If conflicts do arise، they know how to control and eventually resolve them. This tribal administration allows for individuals or groups to present their cases before there leders. Because these are known to possess exceptional wisdom and patience and that they understand the nature and traditions of the people who have brought their conflicts to them، they are able to render judgments that are acceptable to all who come before them،either Beja or non Beja. \ This study also compares some aspects of the Sudanese Arbitration Laws of 2005 with the Beja unwritten laws seeliif”. The main point of comparison is that of taking oaths and making promises as a means of resolving conflicts and what oaths and promises mean to the Beja people. The study points out that the Beja avoid taking oaths under any circumstances and explains why the Beja shun this practice.
