This paper investigates how the Salafists are represented in six Egyptian news reports published during the post-January, 2011 revolution period. Using van Dijk's (1998) 'ideological square', the researcher attempts to find out how the negative representation of the Salafists was reflected on the lexicalization of six news reports revolving around the topic of "demolishing the shrines" published in six daily Egyptian newspapers. Data analysis shows that the lexical choices and metaphors of the journalists were meant to establish the culpability of the Islamists for violent and radical acts and represent them as causing social disturbance in Egypt. |
