The purpose of this study is to analyze and study the effect of the mosque in respect to the formation of the Islamic city structure and its circular formation around it.
The Islamic cities used to arise around the main congregational mosque throughout Islamic history, beginning from Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, and ending with the cities of the Islamic world.
The central circular development was clearly witnessed in the Islamic cities and the cities were established as a result of the effect of the pillar of circumambulation around the Kaaba and the direction of the five obligatory prayers, in addition to the Friday congregational prayer, as all of them revolve around the mosque.
The early Muslim scholars applied scrutiny in respect to envisaging and discussing the circular planning around the mosques. Indeed, they established the cities and the system of land utilization based upon the relationship with this form.
It may be that from among the earliest academic efforts on the subject area of the circular planning for cities was witnessed in Madinat As-Salam (City of peace), established by the Caliph Abu Ja’far Al-Mansur, upon the Euphrates river, in the era of the Abbasids. He was followed in that by the genius Ibn Abi Ar-Rabee’ and others who discussed this subject as well, during the same era.
