كان للمرابطين دور هام في نشر الإسلام في مملكة غانة، والتي هي من أقدم الإمبراطوريات في غربي إفريقيا، ويرجع إليهم الفضل في إسلام معظم قبائل غرب إفريقيا، وما استتبع ذلك من انتشار الثقافة العربية الإسلامية في المنطقة. وتتميز مملكة غانة بموقع جغرافي هام، جعلها محط اهتمام للدعاة والتجار المسلمين منذ القرون الأولى للإسلام، ولذلك كتب عنها الرحالة والجغرافيون والمؤرخون العرب والمسلمون، وتناولوا أهميتها الجغرافية والاقتصادية، وبداية ظهور مملكة غانة سياسياً. وبدأ انتشار الإسلام في مملكة غانة بعد وصول الإسلام إلى الصحراء، وإسلام قبائل الملثمين، وجهود مملكة الأنباط الملثمين في أودغشث في نشر الإسلام بها فى القرن الرابع الهجرى. ثم جاء بعد ذلك دور المرابطين فى نشر الإسلام في مملكة غانة، بعد خروج زعيمهم يحيى بن إبراهيم للحج، ومروره على الفقيه أبي عمران الفاسي، وطلب منه فقيهاً يعلمهم أمور دينهم فاختار لهم الفقيه عبد الله بن ياسين، وكلفه بتعليمهم مبادئ الإسلام الصحيحة بعد أن انحرفوا عنها، ولكن قبائل صنهاجة لم يستجيبوا له في بادئ الأمر، فقام بإنشاء رباط له ولأتباعه يكون مقراً لدعوته في إحدى جزر نهر السنغال، وبذل عبدالله بن ياسين جهداً كبيراً في تصحيح المفاهيم والمعتقدات بين المرابطين من خلال هذا الرباط حتى كثر أتباعه، فقام بتوجيههم بعد ذلك بقيادة يحيى بن عمر إلى الجهاد في مملكة غانة، وبعد استشهاده قام أخوه الأمير أبي بكر بن عمر بمواصلة الجهود لنشر الإسلام فى بلاد السودان الغربى بصفة عامة، ومملكة غانة بصفة خاصة، حتى تمكن من الاستيلاء على مملكة غانة، وسقوط عاصمتها في أيدي المرابطين، وانتشار الإسلام فيها.
