The beginnings of Jewish religious poetry were not in Spain, but it is very old, precisely at the end of the Talmud period. This type of poetry is considered to be one of the original and prominent productions of the Jews.
However, in Spain, especially during the middle ages, with the influence of worldly poetry, religious poetry was renewed in form and content, and this type of poetry reached the peak of its glory from the beginning of the tenth century to the end of the 15th century.
Religious poetry in Spain is a continuation of ancient Jewish religious poetry, but it has unique characteristics and features. It was enlightened poetry based on high philosophical ideas through its influence on Arab culture.
Religious poetry was written with the inspiration of Al-Muqra, and with a special influence from a book of the Torah, the Book of Psalms, that the origin of the renewal and resurgence of religious poetry in Spain came by (Suleiman Ibn Jabirol) in Muslim Spain (Andalusia) during the Middle Ages. There was a significant encounter between Jewish and Islamic culture, resulting in a mix between the two cultures.
Religious poetry in Spain has been reformed in terms of language, style, image and basis, including purity and clarity of expression, with the use of the language of the Al-Muqra, its words, and rules instead of the language of the wise men of the mishnah, so we find that religious poetry in Spain matches and fits the logic of the new generation and its literature.
The Jewish poets of Spain added to religious poetry and rhyme systems, various compositions and forms, and they divided poetry into couplets.
The first author of religious poetry in a new style was Donash ibn Labrat, followed by Suleiman Ibn Jabirol, who brought religious poetry to the top. He used Jewish religious poetry in Spain for Saturday and festive prayers for Jewish groups living in Spain.
Religious poetry in Spain had abandoned the language of the mishnah, not only in style but also in content.
The Jewish poets of Spain describe in their poetry man and his position in this world, his weakness, his sins, and his position before God.
The poets of this phase also described the relationship between Allah and his people and described the phase of the diaspora and then the return to Zion.
