|f The poet Mohammed Al-Saeed Al-Zahri considered the artistic image to be similar with that of modern Algerian poetry with all the characteristics including: clarity, simplicity, sensuality and traditionalism, as well as modernity and innovation.\nThe weakness of the image, which emerges from the first three characteristics, is resulted by number of important reasons, which can basically be seen in the poet Al-Zahri‘s influence with classical Arabic poetry which who did not imitate others neither he made any creativity. In addition, the poet was not familiar with global literature.\nHowever, the fourth characteristic of the artistic image Al-Zahri used to believe in cannot be underestimated, especially in that dark period of the history of Algeria in which the poet lived, where literary and cultural life deteriorated and fell in the abysses of weakness and failure due to the policy of repression and ignorance the most prominent of which is the French occupation of the nation of Algeria.\nThe artistic image is one of the most important characteristics that distinguish the language of poetry from the language of prose, because it is the tool through which the poet can influence the same recipient, arouse his feelings and emotions and create an atmosphere of beauty which is good for the soul to enjoy.\nIf we look at our classical Arabic criticism to know how much attention it paid to the artistic picture, we find that it did not pay as much attention as the modern criticism paid, especially the Western modern criticism paid the much more attention to it even it considers it as "a distinctive factor of modern poetry as every text is known as being poetry through its strong pictures.\nIt goes without saying that the attention of the classical Arab critics to this artistic issue was according to their understanding and taste. They were referring to it as part of their reference to the elements of poetry.\nFor example, Al Marzouqi, in his introduction to the book "Deewan Hamasa by Abi Tammam" refers to the element of portrayal through the presentation of the axes of poetry, which is the honor of the meaning and its validity, thee eloquence and purity of the word and its integrity, correct and true description, the approach in simile, the cohesion of the parts of the systems and the difficulties they go through in the selection of correct and appealing meter, rhyme and metaphor.\nWe find that Ibn Khaldun is not different from Al Marzouqi when he refers to the importance of portrayal in poetry in the context of his talks about his poetry. He says: "It is the eloquent talk based on metaphor and detailed descriptions with parts that are compatible with meter and rhyme." Although Ibn Khaldun has placed the imagination at the forefront of artistic elements of poetry.\nIt is fact that Abdul Qahir Al-Jarjani is one of those who spoke about the importance of portrayal among classical Arab critics, as well as he is the best who understood it very well in the process of poetic creativity. In this regard, he says: "Celebration and workmanship in the picturizations that please the listeners and the fantasies that shake Mamdouh (those who are commended, praised and glorifiedand) and move them like it directly creates effect in the heart of the beholder of the pictures created by the very expert who has all the expertise in the field of art including inscription and graving. They mesmerise, charm and create in the heart a strange state which has not been seen in the past… Likewise the poetry presents the portrayal of surroundings. \nAs for as the function of the picture in the poetic work is concerned, the simplest of what was said in its definition "is that it conveys the poet's feelings and his thoughts based on the personification and not on the statement or on the abstraction.\nThe artistic picture is based on the language of the metaphor, and its function is to convey the feelings of the poet and his vision on the existence. Therefore, it was said that the artistic picture means" drawing of words loaded with feeling and emotion." These words were originally formed to express intellectual facts; when the poet wants to express his emotions he feels that without the same intensity of passion and warmth of feeling. He therefore tends to another language which enters into his heart and portrays the warmth, strength and depth of his heart. This cannot be achieved by the poet unless he is focussed on the second dimension of the language, which is the metaphorical dimension represented in simile, metaphor and allegory, which visualizes the meanings - with the personification- increasing the beauty.\nThe question that arises in this context is: What are the characteristics of the artistic image in modern Algerian poetry, through one of symbols of the poet Mohamed Said Al-Zahri?
