Higher education is at the core of social, economic, cultural, political and technological development of a nation. This article aims to provide a comparison of higher education systems in Saudi Arabia and China by outlining their history, their higher education policies, and the current issues they face. A neoliberal approach is used to analyze the similarities and differences in the higher education systems of these countries. Results suggest that structural reforms in educational policies must be implemented to address the current demands of the global market economy while taking into consideration the existing social institutions that influence the day-to-day lives of a particular society. Recommendations to address current challenges and enhance higher education in Saudi Arabia are also provided.
